What is Bentonite Clay?

Bentonite clay works by absorbing and removing toxins, chemicals, metals, and impurities from your body.

Roughly 200,000 years ago, our ancestors used clay to bathe in, soothe skin disorders, and heal their bodies. In the year 300 B.C., philosopher Aristotle referenced the use of drinking clay for various health purposes, including digestive health.

In more modern times, Native Americans also benefited from using clay, which they referred to as “Ee-Wah-Kee” A.K.A. “The Mud That Heals”. Formed from volcanic ashes, and containing approximately 50 trace minerals, you might be interested in it’s so-called “healing powers” too.

my experience using clay:

My first time using clay was when my family and I all caught a horrible virus (fever, cough, strep throat, migraine, pink eye, digestive problems). After stumbling upon this clay, I felt like it was the answer to my prayers.

Immediately after soaking in the detox bath for 20 minutes, my cough went away, my energy levels increased, and my daughter’s eyes began extracting an insane amount of discharge (from the pink eye). To be honest, I wasn’t expecting much from this, as I know natural remedies don’t alleviate your symptoms immediately like modern medicine, but I was IMPRESSED.

I thought if a simple bath soak did all that, what would happen if we drank it? It was unappetizing to say the least (it was similar to drinking mud), but this virus was kicking our butts, so I was pretty much desperate to be rid of it.

The following day, we all had miraculous changes in our symptoms! All of our pink eye symptoms were gone, the skin on our face was clearer than ever, my digestive problems were no longer, and my migraine also disappeared. Sure, some might say it was coincidence, but I believe otherwise.

food grade Bentonite Clay

Food grade is best to use. My favorite brand is Starwest Botanicals Sodium Bentonite Clay. The quality is excellent and is very affordable compared to others.

How to Use Bentonite Clay?

Well, my friend, that 1 question has infinite answers! Bentonite clay is extremely versatile and can be used for hair, skin, digestive problems, and the list goes on! Let’s jump right into it, and you can choose which method works best for you!

One thing to note is bentonite clay should not be used after handling metals of any kind. Metals are believed to reduce its effectiveness on our body and interfere with the clay’s “magnetic charge”. Do not use a metal spoon or a metal bowl to mix and do not store in a metal container.

external uses for bentonite clay:

1. bentonite clay for Diaper Rash, Poison Ivy, Bites/Stings, Surface Wounds

Did you know it is said to heal diaper rash seven times faster than traditional creams? Clay can be used for rashes, bites, stings and surface wounds for natural, faster healing. Simply mix the clay with water to form a mud-like texture and apply directly to the affected area(s).

2. Toothpaste

Since bentonite clay is rich in minerals, such as silica, magnesium and calcium, it “remineralizes” your teeth! It’s excellent at preventing cavities and drawing toxins out of your mouth (like bad breath).

3. Deodorant

Bentonite clay naturally absorbs moisture and odors and soothes bumps and rashes, which makes using it as a daily deodorant a no-brainer. And as a plus, making your own deodorant is surprisingly easy! Upcycle your old deodorant containers, or use a glass or plastic container with a tight fitting lid to store. Here’s a recipe for homemade bentonite clay deodorant.

4. Armpit Mask

Armpit care isn’t something we really talk about, right? We kind of ignore or hide dark armpits and rashes. As much as deodorants claims to brighten or soothe, I’ve never noticed a significant difference after using them. Bentonite clay on the other hand will lighten your armpits and clear them of any bumps.

Mix 1 tablespoon of bentonite clay, 1 teaspoon of apple cider vinegar, and 1 teaspoon of water together. Apply an even layer on both armpits. Allow to sit 10-20 minutes and rinse with warm water. Easy peasy!

5. Foot Mask

Soothe and detoxify your feet with bentonite clay. If you have foot odor, cracked, dry or sore feet, this detox is for you. Fill your bathtub (or a large bowl) with warm to hot water.

While filling, mix 2 tablespoons of bentonite clay with 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar and apply to both feet and let dry for 5-10 minutes. Once dry, place your feet into the water and soak for 20 minutes.

6. Bath Soak

My favorite way to use bentonite clay! A bath soak is an excellent way of fully drawing out toxins while also relaxing your body and mind simultaneously. I’m not great at meditating, but I find bath soaks to be the closest thing to it.

Avoid putting the bentonite clay directly into the bathtub to mix – it won’t dissolve very well. Instead, combine 2 tablespoons of bentonite clay in a glass bowl or cup with warm water and then add to the warm bath. Soak for 15-20 minutes and rinse.

7. Face Mask for Acne, Eczema, & Oily Skin

The holy grail of clearing your skin! Bentonite clay absorbs your excess oils and naturally dries your skin and removes the impurities. Sayonara, acne! This face mask cannot be used if you have dry skin – trust me, I speak from experience.

For the mask, mix clay and water together to form a mud-like texture and apply a thin, even layer on your face and neck. Let it dry for 10-15 minutes and rinse with warm water.

8. Shaving Cream

Using bentonite clay is a natural alternative to shaving cream. It also minimizes your risk of razor bumps and razor burn.

Mix your desired amount of bentonite clay with water to form a paste and apply an even layer on your skin. Let it sit for a few minutes and then shave.

9. Body Wash

Castile soap is the most natural body wash you can have, but adding bentonite clay helps to remove oils and impurities from the skin.

Combine 2 tablespoons of bentonite clay with 1/2 cup of liquid Castile soap and 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar. Store in a glass container with a tight fitting lid. Use 3 times per week.

10. Shampoo

If you’re seeking volume, texture, and anti-frizz, bentonite clay shampoo will do it all! It will give your hair a thick, yet soft texture.

Add 1 tablespoon of bentonite clay with 1/4 cup – 1/2 cup of water. *Optional – add 1/2 – 1 teaspoon of coconut or jojoba oil. Leave in your hair for 3-5 minutes and rinse well.

11. Hair Mask

Hair masks have been all the rage for the last decade. They moisturize, remove frizz, and help damaged hair.

Mix 1/2 cup of bentonite clay with 3 tablespoons of melted coconut oil or jojoba oil and 6 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar. Once combined, add 3 tablespoons of water and mix well. Work into your hair, starting at the roots, and then all the way to your ends. (Recipe courtesy of Redmond.life). Leave on for 20-30 minutes and rinse well.
